Valentine’s Day was particularly sweet for the Union boys’ basketball team this past Monday in La Porte City with the Knights beating the Columbus Catholic Sailors, 45-37, for the team’s first postseason win since 2015-2016 season where they advanced out of the first round. During Monday evening’s game, the hardwood clearly belonged to Knights starting forward/center Logan Rosauer who put up an impressive defensive performance under the Sailors’ net – fielding a dozen rebounds, blocking like the Knights’ postseason depended on it, and snagging the ball from the Sailors several times leading to crowd-pleasing breakaway points. Rosauer was the offensive leader for the Knights as well with 11 points. No matter where the Knights’ season goes from here, sophomore Rosauer’s first-round postseason performance is a sure sign he’s setting himself up to be a valuable veteran player for Union the next two seasons. But even with Rosauer’s stellar showing, the fourth quarter wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Knights – after leading by 10 or more points the first three quarters, Union let the Sailors coast within three of tying up the score with less than two minutes remaining. The final points of the game came from point guard Ty Lorenzen who was fouled twice. He sunk his third free throw with less than 12 seconds on the clock to put the score at 45-37. Lorenzen missed his final free throw, but the Knights’ postseason story was cemented at that point. Union will enter the second round of the postseason by heading to Denver on Thursday, Feb. 17, to take on the Jesup J-Hawks. The J-Hawks are undefeated in conference play. Union lost both times they faced the J-Hawks this year – the second time by 24 points. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m. at Jesup High School.
