Union sends three grapplers to Class 2A state tournament

The Union Knights boys wrestling team will be sending three to the state tournament this week including Brayden Bohnsack at 106 pounds, undefeated Jace Hedeman at 113 pounds, and Caleb Olson at 145 pounds — all three are repeat state qualifiers with Hedeman last year’s 106 pound state champ.

The trio also notched three district championships last Saturday during the postseason tournament in Independence with Bohnsack winning his final match by decision over Mount Vernon’s Klayten Perreault 8-5, Hedeman winning his final match by technical fall over Mount Vernon’s Jake Haugse 19-4, and Olson winning his final match by decision over Mount Vernon’s Jackson Jaspers 3-0.

This week the team will travel to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines for the state tournament which begins Wednesday.

Each of the Union wrestlers will receive a bye in the first round with Bohnsack (42-5) and Hedeman (44-0) both seeded No. 1 in their respective weight brackets, and Olson (25-2) seeded sixth.

The boys state wrestling tournament begins Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 9 a.m., and lasts through Saturday.
