Last week the Union/North Tama girls soccer team faced two Class 1A ranked teams – No. 3 (Week 3 rankings) Dike-New Hartford Wolverines on Monday and No. 13 (now No. 9) Hudson Pirates on Thursday – falling to both by a three point spread.
Knights v. Dike-New Hartford
According to head coach John Simon following the April 17 road game with the Wolverines, the Knights “played a very solid game” but ultimately came up short, losing 4-1.
Sophomore forward Avery Knoop continued to excel for the Knights on offense, scoring the team’s lone goal with an assist from junior Dena Robb.
Keeper Dacey Powell – who has played her heart out this season – had 26 saves against the Wolverines.
Powell is currently the No. 3 player in the state of Iowa across all classes for number of saves this season with 137 (as of Monday, April 24), behind Katy Anderson of Cedar Rapids Washington (143) and Keelyn Griffin of Wapello (144).
Knights v. Hudson
It was another tough matchup for the Knights on Thursday at home against the Hudson Pirates with Union/North Tama again losing 4-1.
Knoop repeated her Monday night performance by again scoring the team’s lone goal with an assist this time from freshman Laren Frush. Knoop notched two shots on goal during the game with teammate Reagan Sorensen doing the same.
Powell made 23 saves against the Pirates.
Heading into this week, Union/North Tama was 2-5 for the season and was set to face Mount Vernon (3-3) at home on Monday followed by Grundy Center/G-R (3-4) on the road Thursday at Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School.
On Saturday, the team was scheduled to play Regina Catholic in Iowa City beginning at 10 a.m.
