LA PORTE CITY – Union girls and boys track teams claimed first place last week Friday while hosting the REB Coed Relays thanks to strong showings from Knight athletes across both field and running events.

Against nine other area teams in attendance including Benton Community, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Hudson, and Vinton-Shellsurg, the Union girls claimed the top of the podium with 165.5 team points, while the boys did the same with 153.5 team points.

West Delaware (110 points) and Independence (102.5 points) claimed runner-up for the girls and boys teams, respectively.

The Union girls team earned 13 top-3 finishes including Amilia Condon’s first place finishes in both the 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter runs. Sydney Anton was the champion in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15:72 and Brigitte Rohrer was the champion in shot put with a throw of 38 feet.

The girls’ 4X100 relay (Sydney Anton, Anabelle Siech, Aubrey Gates, Kate Carlson), 4X800 relay (Brynn Albertsen, Lily Lorenzen, Emily Petersen, Amilia Condon), and 4X100 shuttle hurdle relay (Ava Mills, Reagan Sorensen, Sydney Anton, Jailyn Petersen) teams also took first place.

The boys earned 14 top-3 finishes including Mason Mullen’s first place in the 400-meter run (53:05) and Logan Rosauer’s first place in the 110-meter hurdles (15:59).

The boys 4X400 relay (Joren Fisher, Asher Beermann, Jay Petersen, Mason Mullen), 800 sprint medley (Joren Fisher, Trevor Clark, Levi Hadachek, Mason Mullen), and 4X110 shuttle hurdle relay (Grady Anderson, Kolton O’Connor, Mays Weber, Jakob Gasco) teams also took first place.

Following a girls’ invite at Aplington-Parkersburg tonight Monday and a boys’ meet at New Hampton the same night, both teams are set to compete at the North Iowa Cedar League Mega Meet hosted by Dike-New Hartford at the Kruger-Oster Track in Dike on Thursday, May 4.

The Knights will compete again at Dike-New Hartford next week on Thursday, May 11 in the Class 2A state qualifier where they will face athletes from Aplington-Parkersburg, Columbus Catholic, Dike-New Hartford, East Marshall, Grundy Center, Hudson, Iowa Falls, Manson-NW Webster, Roland-Story, South Hardin, and West Marshall.

Qualifiers will advance to the 2023 Iowa High School Track and Field Championships set for May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
