Letter to the Editor: National Ag Week

Dear Editor,

Even in these difficult times, we can be grateful for the blessings we enjoy in this country, like our safe food supply and a wide variety of food choices. National Agriculture Week, March 15-21, is a great opportunity to celebrate Iowa’s abundant natural resources and the committment farm families make to feed us all.

Ninety-six percent of the farms in Iowa are family farms and it takes all of us working together to supply the world with food, fiber and energy. Iowa plays a large role in meeting the needs of the world since we lead the nation in corn, soybean, hog and egg production.

But we’re not all hogs and corn – Iowa also has a number of grape vineyards and bee colonies. Exports from Iowa also make an important impact worldwide.

Iowa’s farmers also value our natural resources and are committed to farming responsibly. That’s why Iowa leads the country in acres devoted to the buffer strips that protect our water quality. It’s also why livestock farmers invest in modern housing that is well-ventilated, warm, well-lit, clean and scientifically designed for the specific needs of their animals.

The food we enjoy today is a product of a great production system and hard work of the Iowa farmers. Everyone has a job to do and farmers do theirs very well.

Sincerely,

Julia Babinat
