The Dengler Domain: Christmas Gifts

With Thanksgiving in the rear view window, Christmas shopping is here. This wonderful holiday has many great advantages. Whether it is receiving or buying gifts, it is a fun time. In the past, shopping for this holiday was easier and harder.

Before the internet, Christmas shopping was harder. The internet makes it easy to avoid long lines or driving around for hours for the perfect gift. The internet has endless amount of options. The lack of internet caused people to be more committed and creative with their ideas. More thought and love are expended upon gift ideas. Without the internet, items were not ship to one’s doorstep. This prevents a quick fix to someone in a time crunch to buy a gift. The lack of shipping to one’s doorstep creates bonding opportunities and beautiful stories when shopping with friends and families.

Weather conditions would make it harder to going shopping in different towns. In the early part of the 20th century, it was not easy to travel in the winter. While today it is easy to drive to Waterloo, Cedar Falls or Des Moines in subpar weather, this was not an option in the past. Roads were not as easy to travel so time was limited to spend on shopping for gifts.

Big box stores were not as popular causing a limited number of gift options. The lack of these stores and their discounted prices was harder on shoppers trying to find the best deals. Shoppers needed to scavenger to find the best deals. Weather conditions and lack of big box stores played a big role in how people shopped for Christmas. To solve this issue, shoppers could go to the local five and dime and buy while supporting local business.

Shopping in the past without the internet would have been a better experience. It feels more personal to go to a store and buy a gift than buying a gift on the internet. While wrapping presents is no fun, it is better than someone across the world doing it. Today’s wintry road conditions create a better experience than in the past, but it is the not about how fast one gets to a location, but the journey to it. The creativity of people in the past with the lack of the internet, big box stores, and road conditions made for a tougher, but more fulfilling experience. While it is important to go out and buy gifts, it is more important to be around family during the holiday season. Gifts only go so far, but families last forever.
