The Dengler Domain: Music Battle Royale 7

Nothing compares to lying out on the lawn and looking up at the beautiful stars on a warm summer night. The perfect complement to this activity is beautiful country music. While I do not like today’s country music, country music of the past secures a special place in my heart. Whoa. Did you hear that? I hear the music! It’s time for a Music Battle Royale: Country Edition!

The first song up to bat is Brooks & Dunn’s, “Boot Scootin’ Boogie.” Released in 1992, this song possesses an easy flowing beat. Ronnie Dunn’s voice adds a distinct flavor to this song no other singer could. The ability for anyone to rock along to the beat of this song is a great quality. The guitar sound in this number one hit was unique. It helped make this song feel one of a kind. Most people can identify this song within its first few bars.

“Boot Scootin’ Boogie” helped re-popularize line dancing in the United States. This form of dancing was missing greatly from this wonderful land. I loved this song growing up. It was very easy to have fun to this uncomplicated song. At every North Tama dance, this song blared through the sound system.

The next song is Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.” This number one hit was released in 1973. The beat of Jolene is quick compared to regular country songs. This beat also makes it fun to start bobbing the body along with it. It starts off with a solid amount of Jolenes being said. The simple story of the song about Jolene trying to take Dolly’s man is a plus. I do not pay attention to lyrics of songs very often, but Dolly makes sure I pay attention to her lyrics. This is also caused by Dolly’s beautiful voice. All her notes are hit with the right amount of sound and vibrato. Due to the storytelling nature of the song, her voice feels underused.

The final song is the classic, “Fishin’ in the Dark” performed by the one and only, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. While the “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” can be identified in a few bars, this number one hit only takes one bar. This song has a catchy and memorable hook. This hook is the best of all the songs in the Royale. The simple rhythm makes this song very enjoyable. “Fishin’ in the Dark” causes everyone to put on their boogying shoes and dance to this smooth rhythm. While the lead singer does not possess the best voice, it does not matter. This song is beautiful in every way possible.

Nothing represents summer more than this wonderful song. It is the perfect summer listen. No contest at all. This song wins the Music Battle Royale: Country Edition by a landslide. Go listen to this song. The memories of those wonderful nights of lying outside and looking up at the stars on warm, humid summer nights will flood back into your head. That feeling is unmatched. I love summer nights.
