A Better Deal for Iowans, from the Desk of Senator Giddens

State Sen. Eric Giddens (D-Cedar Falls)

As the Iowa legislature reconvenes this month, I am returning to the Capitol with a clear purpose and an Iowa-first agenda.

In 2024, I’ll be advocating for a better deal for Iowans. On every bill, at every hearing, and in every debate, I’m going to put middle-class Iowans first and lead with fundamental Iowa values: Opportunity, Freedom, and Accountability.

Here’s what that means for you, and how you’ll see it play out in the Statehouse this year.

Opportunity

I am working to ensure opportunity for every family, every kid, and every worker in Iowa.

I believe:

Every family in every community deserves a fair shot at success, comfort, and an opportunity to get ahead.

Every child should have access to a high-quality public school that prepares them for the life they want.

Every worker deserves a chance to earn a paycheck that supports their family and respects their work.

What I’m advocating for:

Making life more affordable for Iowa families.

Strengthening public education and supporting students, parents & teachers.

Protecting and increasing workers’ rights for a strong middle class.

Freedom

Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain. Iowans believe in our state motto, and I do, too. I’m working for the freedom of all Iowans to make their own choices and live their own lives without undue interference or restrictions from the government.

I believe:

Extreme bans on reproductive healthcare attack fundamental freedoms and endanger the health of Iowa women. A strong majority of Iowans support safe, legal access to abortion.

Local leaders and local communities know best. The state shouldn’t butt in when local governments vote to raise minimum wages or take action to protect residents’ rights, health, and safety.

What I’m advocating for:

Reproductive freedom and legal access to abortion, including a constitutional amendment.

Local control and the right of communities to enact their own policies.

Accountability

I believe politicians, government, and big corporations must be held accountable to the people.

I believe:

Our state government should work for middle-class Iowans, not politicians, special interests or the very wealthy.

Big corporations are all too often getting a free pass in Iowa. We need to make sure the most powerful corporations are acting in our best interest.

Tax relief should benefit Iowa families and Iowa communities – not big business and the ultra-rich who don’t need the help.

What I’m advocating for:

Ending corporate giveaways, insider deals and preferential treatment for special interests.

Holding politicians accountable when they put donors and special interests before Iowans.

Enforcing checks and balances in government.
