Fire Prevention Week 2015
Members of the Dysart Fire Department visited students at Dysart-Geneseo Elementary to give fire truck rides last Thursday as part of the annual Fire Prevention Week.
Operation EDITH is an annual event, taking place across the country during fire prevention week. Our very own Dysart Fire Department and the local schools team together to bring an educational and exciting way to teach the children the importance of fire safety, and what to do if there is a fire.
During the day on Thursday the fire department brought their trucks down to the elementary school where they gave the children rides all throughout town, blowing the sirens and all!
Established in 1996, Operation EDITH is a fire-safety program that seeks to encourage the parents and community members of young children to talk to their kids about the importance of fire safety.
The cornerstone of the campaign is Exit Drill In The Home, thus the name “EDITH”. The purpose is to educate early elementary school children and their families about the life-saving value of having a fire escape plan from their home.
In Dysart on the day of operation Edith the community is encouraged to practice and review the fire escape plan from their own homes. On Thursday night it is also encouraged that you turn on your front porch light if your household is participating in operation Edith. The fire department then invites the children back to the station at 7 pm and the kids get to ride around town and check to make sure everyone’s porch lights are on and we are all practicing fire saftey.
This is a wonderful, and very educational way to teach our children about the dangers of fire. A huge thank you goes out to the Dysart Fire Department. Not just for your time and dedication during opperation Edith, but also your time, hard work, and courage that it takes to be a fireman. We appreciate you and thank you for keeping us safe!
