Tree Talk

It may seem strange to plant trees in the fall, but fall is an ideal time to plant many varieties. It gives the roots time enough to get established before cold weather. They avoid soggy spring months and summer’s intense heat as they adjust to their new location. Most tree species can be planted in the fall.

A few things should be considered. A tall tree is not always the best choice as a shorter tree may not experience as much transplant shock. The tree should have only one leader as double leader trees are more likely to split in a wind storm. Evergreens and shrubs may not be planted on Dysart’s city terraces as they block vision for drivers.

Trees planted in the fall, as well as spring planted trees, need to be watered until the ground freezes. A hose should be turned on gently until at least five gallons of water are supplied for a small tree and ten gallons for a larger tree. Trees need to be watered for up to two years unless there is at least an inch of rain a week during the growing season. Be sure trees are mulched to a depth of two to three inches, with the mulch pulled away from the tree trunk. Tree trunks may be wrapped for winter to prevent rabbit damage.

Special care should be taken to be sure the tree is appropriate for the space. It is especially important to avoid planting tall trees under utility lines. A list of approved trees for planting in Dysart may be found at the city’s website. Property owners may receive half of the cost of a tree up to $25 for planting up to three approved trees per year. A copy of the sales slip should be brought to the office of the Dysart city clerk for tree board approval. Be sure to contact Iowa One-Call at 1-800-292-8989 or 811 at least three or four days before your planting date. One-Call may also be reached at www.iowaonecall.com.

If you have tree questions or concerns for the Tree Board, please leave a message with the Dysart city clerk (319-476-5690) and a tree board member will contact you.
