SPORTS SHORT: Sixth-ranked Knights charge through postseason opener

LA PORTE CITY — The No. 6 Union Knights volleyball team breezed through its postseason opener, beating Pleasantville 3-0 in last Wednesday’s (Oct. 22) Class 2A regional quarterfinal. The Knights (36-12) won 25-16, 25-11, 25-14, to advance to host Grand View Christian (17-19) in this past Monday’s 7 p.m. semifinal.

Junior Bianca Grimm racked up 14 of Union’s 33 kills against Pleasantville, while sophomore Caitlyn Schneider contributed eight and junior Taylen Smith six. Junior Hinley Mast tallied almost all of Union’s assists with 30; senior Emily Anton and Grimm each added one more apiece for the Knights attack.

Mast led the defense at the net with five blocks, while Grimm and senior Reagan Glenn each had a team-high 8 digs apiece. Anton added six more.

As a team, Union served 71-for-75 with seven aces, led by Anton going 11-for-11 with three aces.
