Union boys netters move to 7-1 on the road vs. Janesville

JANESVILLE – The Class 2A No. 9 Union boys basketball team added another win to their record following the two-week holiday break, defeating the non-conference Janesville Wildcats, 72-41, on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, to improve to 7-1 (4-1).

While statistics for the game were not available as of press time, the Knights remained near the top of the North Iowa Cedar League heading into this past week. They were scheduled to play three conference games beginning with Dike-New Hartford (3-5) on Monday, Jan. 5, followed by winless Oelwein Tuesday and Gladbrook-Reinbeck tonight, Friday, Jan. 9.

Ahead of the boys game in Janesville on Saturday, the Lady Knights lost to the Wildcats, 73-46, after notching an early 12-11 lead to end the first quarter.

Janesville took over, 30-26, to end the first half – a lead they steadily improved upon as the game progressed, moving to 46-35 by the end of the third and then scoring 27 points (to Union’s 11) in the final quarter for the non-conference win.

Freshman Paige Pipho led the Knights with 11 points. She also racked up a team-high four steals. Off the bench, sophomore Chloe Sadler and senior Addie Engel had nine and six points, respectively. Junior Taylen Smith contributed another four points, while sophomore Reese Anderson, senior Reagan Glenn, and senior Addie Pospisil all had three points apiece.

On the boards, Glenn led with five rebounds; Sadler had four; Pipho and Engle both had three apiece. Smith made two blocks.

Union girls were 3-6 (2-4) headed into this week. After scheduled road games with Dike-New Hartford on Monday and Oelwein on Tuesday, the Knights are back home tonight, Friday, Jan. 9, to face Class 1A No. 5 Gladbrook-Reinbeck. Tipoff is set for 6:15 p.m. with the boys game to follow.
