BROOKLYN – The Union/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls wrestling team traveled to Brooklyn on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, for the BGM Holiday Brawl, earning a seventh place finish out of 11 teams.
Union/G-R scored 56 total points. Medals were won by Ella Wagner (155) and Mya Ellsworth (170) who both earned bronze. Austin Kirby (104) took fourth and Mia Michael (100) fifth. Both Lexi Umbaugh (120) and Lorelei Hinebaugh (140) wrestled their way to sixth place finishes.
At 155 pounds, Wagner went 1-2 on the day, notching a final round win for third place by pinning Pekin’s Ella Rose in 5:30.
Ellsworth went 3-1 on the day, winning her first round at 170 pounds by pinning Moravia’s Bristal Dowdy in a swift 41 seconds. In the second round, she was pinned by STC powerhouse, Class 2A No. 1 Autumn Elsbury.
On the backside, Ellsworth defeated Sigourney-Keota’s Melanie Woodsmall by pinfall in 1:16. For third place, she toppled South Winneshiek’s Avery Busch with a third period pin (3:48).

South Tama won the tournament with 236 1/2 points, followed by South Winneshiek (143), Sigourney-Keota (134), Louisa-Muscatine (93 1/2), Pekin (91 1/2), BGM (70), Union/G-R (56), Lone Tree (48), Baxter (41 1/2), Midland (33), and Moravia (28).
Union/G-R was next set to compete tonight, Friday, Jan. 9, at Benton Community in the Lady Cat Wrestling Duals.
