Winnike wins high jump title; Knights achieve 10 all-conference honors at NICL Mega Meet

LE GRAND – With his championship performance in the high jump, senior Ethan Winnike led the Knights boys track and field team to a sixth-place finish at the North Iowa Cedar League meet, Thursday, May 7 at East Marshall. Including Winnike, Union’s boys and girls teams earned 10 all-conference honors overall at the 15-team Mega Meet. In the NICL, all-conference is awarded to the top six individuals and the top three relays.

Union boys all-conference

Winnike took the high jump title by clearing 6-2 to defeat East Marshall junior Nathan Frye and contribute 10 points toward his team’s 52-points total. Winnike’s teammate, freshman Jace Sorensen also earned all-conference by finishing fourth in the event (5-10).

Additional all-conference honors earned by Union boys included the 4×800-meter relay team of Jackson Youngblut, Stratton Luke, Cameron Mullen, and Sawyer Spence. The quartet clocked a bronze-medal finish in 8 minutes, 17.66 seconds.

Senior Mays Weber also earned all-conference with his fifth-place performance in the long jump (20-1.5).

Grundy Center boys won the NICL Mega Meet with 111 points followed by Denver (109), Aplington-Parkersburg (79.5), South Hardin (69), and Jesup (63).

Union girls all-conference

The Knights girls team had six all-conference performances Thursday evening, led by the distance medley’s silver-medal finish. The quartet of Haylee Hegdahl, Chloe Sadler, Paige Phipho, and Brynn Albertsen finished the race in 4 minutes, 21.53 seconds.

Albertsen also earned all-confence honors in the 800-meter run by taking bronze. She set a new personal record with her 2:24.32 finish and is now a fraction of second from breaking Union’s open 8 school record of 2:23.41 set in 2002.

Freshman Paigo Pipho earned all-conference honors by finishing third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.67. The quartet of Hegdahl, Pipho, Sadler, and Albertsen also took third in the 4×400, finishing in 4:09.33.

Sophomore Reese Anderson finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (16:39) and senior Adeline Tudor did the same in the 3,000-meter run (12:12.49), rounding out the Knights’ all-conference performances.

Union girls placed eighth overall in the meet with 43 points. Like the boys, Grundy Center girls won with 116 points followed by Dike-New Hartford (100), Aplington-Parkersburg (74), Denver (54), and Jesup (53).
