ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Earlier this month, on Saturday, June 6, the Union Knights baseball team made a historic trip to Busch Stadium, home of Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals, to scrimmage the AGWSR Cougars as part of the Cardinals’ Amateur Game program, which gives high school and college baseball teams the opportunity to play a game on a major league field. The trip took months of planning by district staff, including activities director Michael Bruns, and was a grand success by all accounts. Union and AGWSR took to the field following the Cardinals’ 6-5 come-from-behind win over the Cincinnati Reds, during which outfielder Lars Nootbaar hit his first home run of the 2026 season in the bottom of the eighth inning. The entire Knights roster (grades 8-12) saw game time against the Cougars. In addition to the players, first-year head coach Roger Roseberry and his coaching staff, manager Dylan McGivern, and hundreds of Union fans made the trip to St. Louis for the scrimmage. Union Superintendent John Howard was also in attendance, volunteering as the home plate umpire and looking every bit as awed by the experience as his student-athletes.
