Boys tennis competed in the NICL Conference tournament at Byrnes Park on Tuesday, May 20. The results were as follows, at number 1 Singles, Nathan Dvorak lost 4-8 to Jakob Luna of Dike New Hartford, then lost to Micah Darrow of South Hardin by a score of 4-8. At number 2 singles Joel Wauters defeated Ruben Garcia of South Tama 8-2, then lost to Fran Hart of Waterloo Columbus 1-8, then lost to Ethan Hogle of Grundy Center 5-8 to finish in 4th place. At number 3 singles Jacob Zeien lost his opening round match 3-8 to Mitchell Sanec of Dike New Hartford then lost in the consolation finals 6-8 to Will Hanson of South Tama. At number 4 singles Matt Vogeler received a bye in first round, then lost to Nick Ellis of Aplington Parkersburg 5-8, then won his 3rd place match 8-2 over Dalton Haverkamp of Grundy Center. At number 5 Singles, Brandon Hill won 8-0 over Kieryn High of South Harden, then lost 3-8 to Eliott Kuchera of Waterloo Columbus, followed by a 1-8 loss to Scott Eiklenborg of Aplington Parkersburg to finish in 4th place. At number 6 singles Jared Frost lost a heartbreaker in tiebreaker 8-9 to Junior Anaya of South Tama, but came back with a 8-1 victory over Daniel Talbot of South Hardin.

In Doubles, number 1 team of Dvorak/Vogeler lost their first round match 4-8 to Dike New Hartford’s Luna/Daley, followed by an 8-4 win over Darrow/Balvanz of South Hardin. At number 2, Wauters/Zeien won their opening round match 8-2 over Henson/Garcia of South Tama, then lost to Waterloo Columbus duo of Hart/Ellingson, 2-8, then won 8-2 over Darrow/Stanish of South Hardin for a 3rd place finish. At number 3, Hill/Frost won 8-3 over High/Talbot of South Hardin, then lost to Weidener/Kuchera of Waterloo Columbus 2-8, followed by a 2-8 loss to Clapp/Stoner of Grundy Center to finish in 4th place.

As a team, Union finished in 4th place with 41 points, 1st was Columbus 72, Aplington Parkerburg 62, Grundy Center 49. Finishing 5 thru 7th were South Tama 35, South Hardin 30, and Dike New Hartford with 21.

The boys tennis team travelled to Waterloo for Boys 1A Districts on Thursday May 15th. In singles play Nathan Dvorak lost 6-1, 2-6, 2-6 to Scott Eiklenborg of Aplington Parkersburg. Matt Vogeler won his first round match against Luke Morkel of Independence 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 before losing to Jeff Horak of Waterloo Columbus 1-6, 1-6. In doubles Brandon HIll and Jared Frost won their first match versus Day and Haverkamp of Grundy Center 7-5, 6-4 then lost to the number 1 seeds from Waterloo Columbus 0-6, 0-6 . Joel Wauters and Jacob Zeien lost to Rex and Leo of Oelwein in the first round 4-6, 6-4, 3-6.Union finished in 5th place.
