Diane Caloud — operating a 1977 IH combine — works to bring in the last of her corn harvest just east of Clutier on Thursday, November 4 following several delays this fall including equipment breakdowns, weather, and a death in the family. Done with beans entirely, Caloud said she had about 90 acres of corn left. Caloud has been farming solo since retiring in 2014 from the Times-Republican newspaper and following the passing of her late husband Robert in 2016. According to Chad E. Hart, an ISU extension economist, in his Oct. 18 Ag Decision Maker newsletter, the corn harvest this year is turning out better than most farmers had expected, current cash prices remain at profitable levels, and — despite drought in some parts of the country — U.S. corn production is set to break the 15 billion bushel level for the first time ever.
