New House District 76 seat now an open race

Rep. Dave Williams to retire

The new Iowa House District 76.

State Rep. Dave Williams (D-Cedar Falls) – who previously indicated his intentions to run for reelection later this year in the remade Iowa House District 76 – announced Thursday, Feb. 3 he will be retiring from the Iowa Legislature after serving two terms.

Following redistricting in late 2021, Williams’ current district – House District 60 – was essentially flipped inside out, going from a mostly urban/suburban, Cedar Falls-centric district to a rural district.

Beginning with the 90th Iowa General Assembly in January 2023, the new House District 76 will encompass some of the former urban parts of Williams’ current district along with the additions of Clark, Perry, Geneseo, and Buckingham townships in Tama County including the towns of Traer and Dysart and three rural townships in northwest Benton County including the town of Mount Auburn.

Williams was the only incumbent in the new House district.

Following news of Williams’ retirement, Hudson City Council Member Kate Wyatt, a member of the Democrat party, announced on Facebook her plans to run for Williams’ seat.

As of publication, no member of the Republican Party has yet declared their intentions to run for the District 76 seat.
