NT gearing up for spring sports

Winter sports have come to an end for the 2013 and 2014 school year, with successful seasons for all. As Spring begins, the boys and girls’ tracks, boys and girls’ golf, and girls’ soccer seasons are approaching and the North Tama athletes are getting prepared.

The North Tama boys’ track team consists of seven members. Their first outdoor meet is scheduled for March 31 at BCLUW. Senior, and previous state qualifier, Omar Martinez’s goals for the 2014 track season are pretty simple. Martinez wants to qualify for state in the 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, and the 3200 meter run. “Not only do I want to qualify for these events, I plan to make a run at the title for each event. Those are the goals I have, and they are all I need,” said Martinez.

The North Tama Girls’ Track team is also looking to make a splash this year. With 12 members, including three seniors, Head Coach Vonna Watson thinks they can they make it to State again. “We should be strong in the distance events this year. The long jump will be a strong event for us with returning jumpers from last season. I am excited to see what the team will accomplish this season. We have most of the team back from last year,” said Watson. “The goal for the year would be to improve at each track meet as the season progresses. The girls have been practicing both indoors and outdoors.” Watson also encourages the North Tama student body to come out and support the track and field athletes at a meet this year.

Mike Estes, the boys and girls’ golf coach, is preparing for his seventh year of coaching golf at North Tama. For the 2014 golf season, there are twenty boys and eleven girls signed up. “With the golfers we have coming back and if we can replace the varsity players we lost from last year with some of the young talent, I feel we could have an excellent season,” said Estes. Coach Estes is also excited about hosting a Redhawk Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 3rd for eight other teams.

North Tama girls are also able to play soccer for the Union Knights. Nine North Tama high school girls will be traveling to La Porte to practice and play under Coach Steven Pearce. Pearce is most excited to work with the young, talented group of players that he has. “My goals for this season are to first of all help each player on the team develop their skills and desire for the game of soccer as much as possible. I want to create a strong team that can compete with any team in the state,” said Pearce.

Approximately 60 North Tama freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors will be participating in spring sports this year. Come out and support them on the track, on the filed, or on the golf course.
