North Tama girls excel on Union soccer team

Nine North Tama High School girls have found their niche on the Union High School soccer team. Senior Shayla Kopriva, juniors Alexa Dostal, Destany Himschoot, Olivia Pargeon, and Alexis Taylor, sophomores Alicia Martinez and Alyssa Wrage, and freshmen Morgan Johnson and Marika Kopriva have helped the Union Knights to a winning season.

On Saturday, May 17, the Union Knights Varsity and JV soccer teams participated in the Waverly-Shell Rock Girls Soccer Tournament, the largest high school soccer tournament in Iowa. The Knights JV team, including North Tama’s Alexa Dostal, Destany Himschoot, Morgan Johnson, Marika Kopriva, Morgan Johnson, and Alexis Taylor, came away with a 1 – 0 win over Mason City and a 1 – 2 loss against Cedar Falls.

The Union Varsity team, including defenders, Shayla Kopriva and Destany Himschoot, midfielders, Olivia Pargeon, Alexis Taylor, and Marika Kopriva, and goalie, Alyssa Wrage helped the Knights to a first place finish against the eight teams in their bracket. Play began at 9:00 with a 4 – 1 win against East Des Moines. A 4 – 0 win against Mason City led up to the final game versus Bondurant Farrar. The Knights pulled off a 5 – 1 win to finish the day. The Knights are currently ranked 6th in Class 1A with a record of 12 – 4. Two regular season games remain, with Regional play beginning on June 3.
