Wahlert flys by Union

The Wahlert Catholic Golden Eagles earned their first victory of the year Friday against Union Community by a score of 24-7.

The Golden Eagles ran a gauntlet through the first third of their season with games against Xavier Catholic, Assumption Catholic and West Delaware.

On Friday at Loras College field, the Knights struggled to contain Wahlert quarterback Bryce Rudiger who was 10-of-12 passing for 177 yards and two touchdowns.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half. The Knights held Wahlert to only three points in the second half, but their offense stalled with only a touchdown and an extra-point finding the scoreboard.

Union’s touchdown came in the third quarter on a run by Michael Niebergall. The senior all-purpose back ran five times for 40 yards and brought down two passes in the home effort.

Quarterback Grant Behrens ended the night completing 11-of-18 passes for 146 yards and an interception.

Behrens connected with four different Union receivers including Niebergall, Max Eikamp (5 for 59 yards), Gibson Purdy (1 for 43 yards) and Logan Rosauer (3 for 37 yards).

The rushing leader for the Knights ended up being Joren Fisher, who was largely held in check, running 11 times for 55 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Dakota Marvets was the clear-cut leader with 15.5 tackles. Next up was Grant Brehm who tallied eight tackles (one for a loss) and Grant Behrens with seven (two for a loss).

The loss moves Union to a tie with Oelwein at the bottom of their 2A District 4 standings.

This week the Knights play host to the Jesup J-Hawks for their Homecoming Week finale.

Jesup comes in 2-2 with wins over Hudson and Postville and losses to Aplington-Parkersburg and Oelwein.

Union will have to contend with a J-Hawks offense that can score on the ground and through the air. Their attack has been led thus far by 6-3, 185-pound senior running back Noah Sheridan, who has 349 yards and 5 touchdowns in four weeks.

Junior quarterback Brevin Dahl has not been a pushover however, completing 51 percent of his passes for 471 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 Friday night in La Porte City.
