Last week Monday (April 24) the Union/North Tama girls’ soccer team collected its third shutout of the season, slamming the door on the Mount Vernon Mustangs 3-0 at home.

Junior Reagan Sorensen scored two goals with two assists from sophomore Avery Knoop with Knoop in turn scoring the additional goal with an assist from Sorensen. The defense was led by keeper Dacey Powell with 26 saves.

On Thursday, the team traveled to Reinbeck to take on Gladbrook-Reinbeck, falling to the Rebels 5-1. Sorensen scored the lone goal for the Knights with an assist from junior Molly Grote. Sorensen had four shots on goal during the game, while Knoop notched three. Keeper Powell had 14 saves.

Over the weekend on Saturday, the team traveled south to face Iowa City Regina. In the words of head coach John Simon on Facebook, the girls dropped “a hard fought physical game” to the Regals, losing 4-3. The trio of Knoop, Grote, and junior Charlie Keegan scored for the Knights. Grote and Knoop had an assist apiece. Powell kept the Regals’ ball out of the net 18 times.

Heading into this week, Powell has logged 195 saves for the Knights and continues to sit at the No. 3 slot for most saves in the state for high school girls varsity soccer this season. Powell’s save rate is just over 84%.

On Monday the team was set to travel to Denver to face the No. 9 Denver Cyclones followed by a matchup with Decorah at home on Thursday (May 4).

Union/North Tama was 3-7 on the season heading into Monday’s game.
