Five Knights earn all-conference at NICL cross country meet

Girls finish fourth, Condon earns top-10 medal

DIKE – Five Union cross country runners earned all-conference honors while competing in Wednesday’s North Iowa Cedar League meet at Fox Ridge Golf Course in Dike including junior Amilia Condon, senior Lauren Youngblut, sophomore Brynn Albertsen, junior Lily Lorenzen, and sophomore Sawyer Spence, with Condon securing a top-10 finish in the girls race.

As she has consistently done all year, seventh-ranked Condon crossed the finish line in fourth place with a time of 19:05 behind some familiar, ranked runners including No. 2 Hillary Trainor of Sumner-Fredericksburg who took first, No. 4 Clare Wright of Jesup in second, and No. 5 Mackenzie Wilson also of Jesup in third.

Condon earned all-conference first-team for her efforts this year. Her finish at Dike helped the Knights finish in fifth as a team with 121 points, trailing Sumner-Fredericksburg (76), Denver (78), Hudson (88), and Jesup (95).

Rounding out the girls scores for Union was Lauren Youngblut – second-team all-conference – in 18th with a time of 20:51; Brynn Albertsen – honorable mention and in her first year of cross country for the Knights – in 29th with a time of 21:20; Lily Lorenzen – honorable mention – in 30th with a time of 21:23; and Kate Carlson in 49th with a time of 22:21. Emily Petersen also competed for the Knights, finishing in 62nd place.

Union’s boys team took tenth overall with 248 points. Sophomore Sawyer Spence earned second-team all-conference following his 20th place finish with a time of 17:41. Cameron Mullen finished 39th for Union with a time of 18:51, while Mason Herman took 57th, Kengo Uchiyama-Hansen 65th, and Maddux DeWinter 72nd. Austin Martin also competed for the Knights, finishing in 84th place.

The Knights run in a 2A state qualifying meet at Monticello next Thursday, Oct. 19 beginning at 4 p.m.

Other teams assigned to the qualifier include Alburnett, Anamosa, Camanche, Crestwood, Cresco, Hudson (girls No. 13), MFL MarMac, Monticello (girls No. 3), North Fayette Valley, Northeast, Postville, Starmont, Tipton (girls No. 6), Vinton-Shellsburg (boys No. 7), and Waukon (boys No. 2).
