LA PORTE CITY – The Union Knights girls basketball team almost eked out what would have been their fourth win of the season against the Oelwein Huskies last Tuesday (Jan. 16) but ultimately succumbed 48-47 following a tense home court matchup.

Union ended each of the first three quarters ahead – running the lead up to 40-31 to end the third – before falling in the final quarter. The tension on the court was so high between the two teams, a pair of Knights starters – Ava Mills and Brigitte Rohrer – both fouled out in the second half, while at least one Oelwein starter came precipitously close to doing the same.

Against the Huskies, seniors Reagan Sorensen and Mills led the offense for Union with Sorensen scoring 19 points (four 3-pointers) and Mills scoring 15 points (one 3-pointer).

On defense, Mills and sophomore Reagan Glenn led the Knights: Mills notched six rebounds and three steals; Glenn had five rebounds.

Union had 13 turnovers while Oelwein had 18.

Following the narrow Tuesday night loss to the Huskies, the Knights faced newly-ranked Class 2A Jesup on Friday, losing to the No. 15 J-Hawks, 62-24.

The next evening, Saturday, Jan. 20, the Knights were back on the court, traveling to Dike to play the Wolverines who are currently the No. 1 team in 2A and reigning state champs.

Union lost 68-24 against the Wolverines.

Entering the week, Sorensen – Union’s point guard – sits at No. 1 across all classes for number of 3-point attempts with 167 while also being tied for third in 3A for 3-pointers made with 39.

This week Union (3-12) was set to host Sumner-Fredericksburg (7-6) on Tuesday before traveling to Grundy Center on Friday to face the No. 11 Spartans (13-1).
