Union girls golf shoots lowest team score in nearly 20 years – then bests the feat

The Union girls golf team shot their best team round in nearly 20 years recently. First on April 15 at Sumner-Fredericksburg, then again on April 24 at South Tama (pictured) where they earned a team score of 195 - besting their April 15 score by six points. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

It was a busy slate for Union’s boys and girls golf teams in mid-April as each had three meets with one being an 18 hole event.

Both started the week of April 15 at Sumner-Fredericksburg, facing the Cougars in a dual meet.

Sumner-Fred’s Chloe Bolte bested everyone as is usually the case with a blistering round of 33 which is 5 under par for the ladies (Par 38). Our ladies team was led by senior Clara Carlson who shot a season low 46 which along with some other quality scoring, nearly helped the team reach one of their season long goals of breaking 200 for a team score. They ended up shooting a 201 which was our lowest score in nearly 20 years*.

*Telegraph note: The girls bested themselves on April 24 at South Tama by earning a team score of 195. Senior Sydney Schmuecker earned her first medal with a good round of 49 and senior Clara Carlson led the crew with a career best 44.

The boys were led by senior Sam Fehl and sophomore Henry Hegdahl who shot 40 and 41 respectively

On Wednesday, April 17, our girls played in the Wapsi Creek Invitational in Anamosa. It is an 18 hole event played at the Fawn Creek Country Club and then a second nine at the Wapsipinicon Country Club.

Wet and rainy conditions in the morning made scoring difficult, but we managed a fourth place finish out of the six teams that were there.

Our team was led by junior Amelia Schmitz who won her #5 grouping with a 102 that included a 47 on the back nine at the very narrow and challenging Wapsipinicon Club.

On Thursday, April 18, both the boys and girls were at home playing in a Triangular with Aplington-Parkersburg and Hudson. The girls had another good team scoring round with a 205 that included a 49 from Clara Carlson and a 50 from senior Ava Mehlert to earn medalist and runner-up medalist honors.

Aplington-Parkersburg won the boys competition with an impressive score of 156. Hudson senior Oliver Thomson led all players with a round of 38, and Cormick Steege won the cardback out of a group of four golfers who all shot a 39 to earn runner-up medalist.

Finally, on Saturday, April 20, the boys competed in the Annual Grundy Invitational. Conditions were per usual for this event – cold and windy with the temps finally getting into the mid 30s by the back nine.

Grundy Center was able to edge out fellow 2A juggernaut Dyersville Beckman by one shot to take the team title. Luke Harwick was the medalist with a round of 75, followed by Judd Jirovsky of Grundy Center who shot 76 and was the runner-up medalist. Both were stellar scores in those conditions.

The Knights were led by sophomore Brock Bergmeier who was actually a late addition to the team this year and someone who is very new to the game having just picked up the sport last summer. Brock shot 85 and finished in a tie for seventh with four other players. He was able to best one of those participants during a playoff to earn a ninth place flag. He has a great temperament for golf which has helped him be so successful this early on. The team has several freshmen and sophomores who are getting some valuable experience this year and improving their game day-by-day to have us excited for the future.
