SULLY – Several members of the North Tama track and field team will be competing this week in the 2025 Iowa High School Track & Field Championships held on Drake University’s famed Blue Oval after qualifying during the Thursday, May 15 Class 1A district meet hosted by Lynnville-Sully.
In Class 1A, the top place winner in each event plus the next 14 best district performances statewide advance to the state meet.
Senior sprinter Tyrus Luker qualified in the boys 100-meter dash after competing in a smoking field that ended up qualifying the first five finishers. He placed fifth in the event with a time of 11.55 seconds, beating out Lynnville-Sully’s Jace Johnson – who did not qualify – by a mere fraction of a second.
Luker is seeded 22nd at state ahead of St. Edmond sophomore Aaron Hindt and Saint Ansgar senior Dylan Brumm. The district title at Lynnville-Sully went to Iowa Valley senior Caleb Haack (10.95) who is seeded No. 2.
At state this week, Luker was set to run in the third heat of the 100 preliminaries on Thursday, May 22, at 6:45 p.m.
The North Tama girls 4X800 relay team of freshman Shawna Cibula, sophomore Olivia Youngblood, freshman Isla Breakenridge, and junior anchor Gabby Seda also qualified for state Thursday evening in Sully after taking bronze in the event with a time of 10 minutes, 27.27 seconds, defeating fourth-place Baxter by nearly 19 seconds. The Redhawks are seeded 15th at state and will run in the first heat of the finals on Thursday, May 22, at 5 p.m. Rachael Murty, Brynley Seda, and Violet Seda will serve as alternates.
On May 9, North Tama girls track head coach Katey Holbach posted on social media about her team, writing “We may be small with only 10 girls out, but they make sure they represent [North Tama] well at all of their meets. They work hard, keep the complaints to a minimum, and are just genuinely great girls to be around. Kudos to their parents for these amazing ladies.”
The 2025 Iowa High School Track & Field Championships take place May 22-24 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
