ANAMOSA – The Union boys’ golf team kicked off their season Wednesday, April 8, taking part in the Wapsi Creek Invitational in Anamosa. They played their opening 9 holes at the Wapsipinicon Golf Club which has a very tight layout with shared fairways throughout the course.
The team shot 158 and was leading the meet over MFL MarMac by 1 stroke. They then went to play their second nine at the Fawn Creek Country Club. High winds and some rain late in the round made scoring difficult, but the home team Anamosa was able to negotiate the conditions the best in route to an impressive score of 154 for a total of 316.
Union ended up in second with a 327 and were led by sophomore Nash Schmitz who earned a third place finish and bronze medalist honors with a 77.
The girls team found scoring difficult at Anamosa and ended up in 6th place with a score of 447. The team was led by freshmen Mia Michael with a score of 102 in her first 18 hole meet.
Mia continued her good play the following afternoon (April 9) when the team took on East Marshall at the Wandering Creek Golf Club. We started the meet early due to impending rain which began midway through the round and was heavy at times. Mia ended with a score of 50 and won medalist honors. Senior Melanie Yuska finished four strokes behind her, but it was good enough to earn her first ever medal. She has been steadily making improvements throughout her time on the team these past four years, and it was good to see it pay off for her.
