LA PORTE CITY – It was another busy mid-April week as the season is in full swing for Union golfers. We traveled to Sumner-Fredericksburg Tuesday, April 21, to play at Meadowbrook Golf Course – a tricky layout much similar to our home course.

Meadowbrook has tight fairways, slightly elevated greens and a brook running through that comes into play on several holes. We shot a 154 there a few years ago and the goal was to break that mark, but we ended up tying it again with some strong play from sophomore Nash Schmitz who was the medalist with a 35 and junior Coy Mehlert who carded a 37 earning runner-up medalist.

Our ladies found the venue difficult to navigate, but freshman Mia Michael turned in another solid round with a 51.

Knights host A-P

On Thursday, April 23, the boys team hosted Aplington-Parkersburg in a dual meet. The wind was howling and caused some of our players difficulty on a couple of our exposed greens.

A-P, who took 3rd at state last year and brings back another strong team this season, shot a 155. Cormick Steege led their squad with a 37 and medalist honors, followed by Rylan Ascher with a 38 and runner-up medalist.

Schmitz, Mehlert, and senior Henry Hegdahl each shot 41 to lead Union to a team score of 165.

On the road to Grundy

To cap off the week, the boys team participated in the annual Bob Schmadeke Invitational Saturday, April 25, at Town & Country Golf Club in Grundy Center. Seven other teams traveled from as far away as Cascade, Osage, and I-35 (Trurow) to compete.

The conditions for the tournament, which included low winds and moderate temperatures, may have been the best in its 47-year existence, according to Grundy Center’s longtime Coach Dennis Dierks.

Grundy Center’s Mr. Everything, Judd Jirvosky, did not play as he was participating in the Drake Relays. This allowed Cascade an opportunity to best the host school and they took advantage by shooting an impressive 314.

The Knights earned 3rd place by narrowing out Roland Story by one stroke. The top Union finisher was Hegdahl who shot 80 and ended up in a tie for sixth.
