Union golfers tee off at Anamosa

ANAMOSA – Our boys kicked off the season with the Anamosa Invite on Wednesday, April 9. The tournament for boys and girls is played at both the Fawn Creek Country Club and the Wapsi Creek Golf Club. The two courses are a contrast to one another requiring you to pull off all the shots.
The boys opened up play at Wapsi Creek which requires precision off the tee as many of the fairways run along a spine and are shared with one another. The team was led by junior Henry Hegdahl who shot a 39. The squad then moved over to Fawn Creek where freshman Nash Schmitz also shot a 39 en route to an 80 to start his high school career off impressively.
The Knights finished in a tie for fifth in a tightly contested event to start the season.

The Girls team started the meet off at Fawn Creek where Amelia Schmitz – an integral part of last year’s team which made it to the second round of Regionals – led our team as expected with an opening nine of 47 and then turned in a 44 on the back nine for a 91 which was a personal best for her and good enough for fourth place overall. We look for Amelia to have much success in her senior campaign as her game is rounding into form.
Benton Community won the meet, recording an impressive round of 1 over par 72 by sophomore Halle Sobaski.
