Elberon American Legion Auxiliary holds June meeting

The James R. Kalina Elberon American Legion Auxiliary met June 9, with five members present. The meeting was called to order by president, Lorraine Vileta. Colors were advanced by Wilma Parizek and an opening prayer given by Marce Nekola. The Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem and the Auxiliary Preamble were recited by all.

Secretary, Norma Riha read the minutes of the May 12 meeting and treasurer, Pat Sauer gave our financial report. Both reports were approved as read.

Old business included discussing the Memorial Day Program held at the National Cemetery near Vining. The Elberon American Legion and Auxiliary carried flags and the Clutier Legion formed the firing squad. Roy Lidtke the cemetery board president, served as master of ceremonies. Deacon Joe Behounek gave the invocation and benediction. Don Drahos gave a very interesting speech. Catherine Kratoska read the poems, “In Flanders Field” and “America’s Answer”, then read a favorite poem of hers. Randy Nekola played “Taps”, he also played at the Redman, St. Mary’s, Stayskal and Waltham cemeteries following the Elberon Legion firing earlier in the day.

An estimate of a little over a hundred people attended the program and some stayed for a light lunch and fellowship.

The donation cans for poppies were picked up from the Vining post office and Big R’s Bar and Grill and the Elberon hall. We appreciate those businesses supporting us.

New business included the election of new officers. All officers will remain the same for the following year.

June 28 is the Tama County meeting at the Gladbrook Legion. A potluck supper will be at 6:30 p.m. followed by a flag disposal ceremony. Let an Auxiliary or Legion member know if you have an American flag that is no longer serviceable to be properly retired.

Wilma Parizek won the door prize.

Norma Riha served a lunch.
